Justice League (2017)

Rating: PG-13
Run Time: 2 hrs
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 40%/74%

Justice League is the 5th film in the extended DC universe and we get to see Ben Afflec, Henry Cavill, and Gal Gadot reprising their roles as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, respectively. We are also introduced to Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) in this battle against Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons to save humanity from ruin. Coming off the success of Wonder Woman (2017), DC had some big shoes to fill and high audience expectations to meet. But were they able to finally get two wins in a row or did they give us yet another high budget snoozer that lacked substance and story?

The Good:

I was very happy to see that this film gave us much more action and less dramatic exposition, which is something that needed work in the DC universe. The CG effects were a bit much at times but the action scenes were so entertaining that I did not mind it too much. There was one battle scene in particular that involved the Amazonian women and it was one of my favorite scenes of the movie. You know I love a bad ass female in a movie and these Amazonians gave me everything I needed!

Ezra Miller as “The Flash” had the best performance in the film for me. His comedic timing was awesome and while it was hard not comparing him to Tom Holland’s performance in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), he made the character of “The Flash” his own and I look forward to his solo film. Jason Momoa as “Aquaman” was pretty good as well. I couldn’t help but notice the similarity to Thor with his performance and I am not sure if this was intentional or not but I saw it none the less. The chemistry with all the actors was really good overall. I thought they did a great job casting this film.

The Bad:

Here is my biggest issue with Justice League… it seems like DC is in such a rush to go tit for tat with Marvel that they are rushing films and not giving these well-known (some of them at least) characters the justice (no pun intended) they deserve. While I don’t think we need another Batman or Superman origin film; it would have been nice to get a second Cavill Superman movie prior to this one. Marvel did a great job of introducing the world to lesser known superheroes and built the MCU around those characters. We were able to connect with Ironman, Captain America, and Thor prior to an Avengers film and that just made sense. DC just threw The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg at us in the hopes that we would just be familiar with them and accept the vague backstory we got for each character. I am well aware that the Aquaman Movie is coming this year and the Wonder Woman sequel is not far behind but we should have gotten those movies plus the Flash and Cyborg solo projects before a Justice League movie.

Another issue I had with this film was with the plot itself. While it was better than other ones we’ve gotten thus far, it was a bit jumbled to me. We have these three boxes that Steppenwolf needs to retrieve to awaken a god of some sort (I think). We don’t really know how the boxes got to each location and why all of a sudden the boxes start to activate. We, again, are just expected to go with the flow and accept whatever we are given. This could have been avoided had we gotten stories prior to this one that explained in more detail Steppenwolf, his power, and the power of the boxes. DC really had a gem on their hands but they were too anxious to show their hand versus building something strong and getting audiences back in their corner with good film making.

Overall Rating:

Justice League was good for what it was, not great but good. I wish they would have waited to release this film and instead focused on getting their potential audience excited about characters other than Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.. Hell, they even could have had each new character face off against different members of The Suicide Squad in solo films prior to releasing that atrocity and then had the Justice League form. DC seems to be headed in the right direction and I’m not mad at that. They just need to take their time, stop trying to compete with Marvel because there is no competition there, and focus on giving us a great DC universe that we can enjoy. So, this Sista Gurl does recommend you check out Justice League and enjoy some decent fight scenes, good performances, and some serious eye candy with Jason Momoa being all sexy and shirtless (sorry fellas!).
